Savants Advisory Ltd Business Recovery & Insolvency Help in London: Review
For most of the firms we review on this site, we have not used their services as an actual client. (It would be weird if we had that many legal problems anyway.) But you can find reviews written by happy or angry people all over the web. Indeed there are mountains of smiley faces and exclamation marks for you to dig through. However, we focus on other things such as the Legal Ombudsman's database, news articles, company filings, owner histories, etc. and try to provide a general objective overview of any company.
Sifting through the internet for relevant information about any firm is sometimes difficult, especially if they have very active marketing or social media personnel. But Savants is one of those firms where any mention online seems to be as a result of their actual work. Not by deliberate design.
Naturally as a firm working with insolvency, you'll see Savants mentioned in a wide array of notices regarding companies that have gone into administration. Reading the firm's website though, the impression is that they'd rather be regarded as a firm that can fix financial issues rather than simply clean up after.
They list their main services as Recovery/Turnaround, Formal Insolvency Procedures, Personal Insolvency, Asset Tracing and Recovery, Corporate Restructuring, and Independent Business Reviews. Again showing that they are not wholly focused on the legal 'bankruptcy' side of things. Their About Us page states:
This is important because if you're searching the web for a firm to provide "business insolvency advice", a lot of the ads popping up will be for firms that specialise solely in processing insolvencies - not trying to prevent them. So be careful of the words you search with online and always, always, always flick through any site before phoning that firm. Also if the staff member on the other end of the line recommends insolvency within 2 minutes of discussing your issues ... it might be time to try the next company on the list.
They are referring to Adrian Duncan who after qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 1993 worked for Credit Suisse Financial Products in London/Hong Kong, then partnered in a leading insolvency practice for several years, was a consultant for the Pensions Regulator, and is now part of the Savant's team. The site currently states his involvement in 550+ corporate insolvencies and the review of 750+ pension schemes. You can view details of his Insolvency Practitioner credentials on the ICAEW website.
On the firm's main site you'll see a full page devoted to information about their Pro Bono and Charity work. The indication is that their Pro Bono offerings are mostly applied to charity and non-profit organisations rather than simply for those that can't afford to pay. However if you are a charity, you could get a double pick-me-up as Savants nominate a new charity to raise funds for each year. Having a specialist firm raise funds for you AND provide free expert business advice is probably every charity's dream! Keep dreaming though. ;)
I said their 'main site' before because if you've already tried searching for information yourself you'll have seen several sites mentioning Savants. There's the main one we link to above, but there's also www.savantscovenantadvisory.co.uk which provides more detailed information about the firm's covenant advisory services including articles such as "Regulated Apportionment - A lifeline for employers?" and "The importance of employer covenants in a challenging economic environment".
You may see several sites related to a firm called Savant Ltd who specialise in IT setups to help businesses, but this is a completely different company. There is also a firm using the website www.corporaterecoveryhelp.co.uk with a registered address matching Savants. A quick check shows the address to be a block of serviced offices with Savants Advisory Ltd and Corporate Recovery Help LLP seemingly unconnected other than by office proximity. You will see the name Jackal Advisory pop up all over the place too, (even on Savants' own website), as that was the firm's previous name.
This brings me on to a little advice about navigation. As I said before, the main site is www.savants.co.uk and it's the one we link to above in the contact details section. www.savant.co.uk is the Savant Ltd company I've just mentioned before and both www.savants.com and www.savant.com are owned by different companies. It's therefore advisable to bookmark any pages you want to return to and preferably copy/paste any email addresses they give you rather than free-hand typing them - just incase you miss an 's' or forget the correct tld in a rushed moment.
As you'll be dealing in financial matters, ensuring you're in the right place is paramount. Even copy/pasting the firm's email addresses rather than typing freehand is advisable. Just read up on some of the scams if you don't believe me.
One final snippet from the firm's website includes a word mentioned several times elsewhere in their content which you probably know, but maybe not in this context. Savants say their services are:
This sparked a little question mark over my head, so I decided to look up what boutique meant when it came to legal or financial matters. The best explanation I found was here. If you know of a better one, let me know.
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Savants Advisory Ltd it's best to visit the website (www.savants.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
