Defank Solicitors in London:
As you go through the hundreds of law firm websites available for legal services in the UK, you've probably noticed a lot use the same sort of wording, images, and make the same claims such as being the 'best' or 'leading' at various things. There are ways you can find out information yourself to help determine whether a particular firm is right for you or not. For today's example we're using the website of the law firm Defank:
A couple of things to watch out for when you're going through any company site. If you see claims that they are 'award-winning' but absolutely no indication what the award was for - be wary. For all you know the award was for best logo design which doesn't help with your legal matter.
Also don't pay attention to sales tactics such as 'established in 1881'. Ancient founding dates are often touted to make people think the firm is well established and therefore that must mean they have plenty of experience. But you can get a 40-year veteran lawyer from a 1-year old law brand, and a 1-year newbie lawyer from a 200-year old law firm. It's the person taking the case that's most important to you.

On that note, there is a great resource we frequently recommend to everyone. The website of The Law Society of England & Wales has a wealth of data for users to see the trading names, contact addresses, areas of expertise, staff, and more of any firm registered with them.
Defank is registered there and you are able to look up the qualification dates, expertise, and languages spoken by any solicitor within the firm. As of writing this, the firm shows a range of experience and expertise amongst their staff including Kolawole Idowun who is listed as having qualified as a solicitor in 2000, Olusesi Odunlami who qualified in 2012, right up to Christian Nwaorah with the almost brand new join date of 2023.
Many Conveyancing firms will have costs listed right on their website. It's much harder to find firms that list general costs for other matters because of how varied they can be. For example, a Personal Injury case may have zero costs up front or even at the end of the case since lawyer fees are typically paid by the third party. However that is not the way for things like Criminal Law. Defank Solicitors does list fees for their Will/Probate, Conveyancing, and Employment Law services which is actually more clarity than you usually see.
A note for security. There are hundreds of websites out there pretending to look like an official law firm when they are actually simply gathering people's case details to sell on to solicitors. The easiest way to spot the difference is by searching the bottom of the firm's website. If they have a valid SRA number (Solicitors Regulation Authority) listed on their website then that should be fine. The firms official website address is usually listed in the SRA certificate.
A quick note on navigation. The firm's official site is www.defanksolicitors.com but www.defanksolicitors.co.uk is not owned by them. Their site is HTTPS secure for submitting your personal details in the contact form. We have seen notes about a Defank Solicitor in Croydon but that seems to be the same firm as this one based slightly further north in Greater London. It is really important to note exactly where you should be going and the official details of the firm you choose because there is so much fraud at the moment targeting clients of property lawyers.
There are thousands of stories online about people who have handed their entire house deposit to scammers sometimes based solely on a single official-looking email which told them the bank details for payment had changed last minute. Any big changes, you need to ring your actual solicitor to check.

If you are looking for a career with Defank Solicitors it's best to visit the website (www.defanksolicitors.com) and locate the correct phone/email contact details. Any quoted here will be for potential clients. Alternating or adding words such as Defank Solicitors Croydon may bring up different background/reviews on the firm. Each firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site too.
